Your teeth are held in place by three supporting structures; bone, periodontal ligaments and gums. Bone is the main support. Between the tooth root and the bone is a ligament called the periodontal ligament. This ligament holds your tooth onto the bone and also acts as a “shock absorber” to everyday forces. Finally, the gums surround the bone and teeth to provide support to the teeth and protection to the bone and ligaments.
Frequent cleanings with a dental professional are crucial to maintaining harmful bacterial levels that lead to periodontal disease. There are certain bacteria that irritate the gums and cause them to recede (dissolve/go away).Your teeth may appear perfectly clean, but if the right flora or harmful bacteria are present, you may have periodontal disease. Plaque and tarter build up from food debris can also lead to an environment or harmful bacteria that cause the gums to recede. As your gums recede, the ligaments and bone supporting the teeth also recede; leaving your teeth with little to no support.
